The Best Time to Visit Tanzania for Safari: A Month-by-Month Guide

Tanzania is one of the few safari destinations that offers exceptional wildlife viewing year-round, but each season brings its own unique highlights and experiences. Understanding the rhythms of the Tanzanian bush will help you plan a safari that aligns perfectly with your interests, whether that is witnessing the Great Migration, enjoying the lush green season, or maximizing your Big Five sightings.

The dry season from June to October is traditionally considered the best time for game viewing across most of Tanzania. As water sources dry up, animals concentrate around rivers and permanent waterholes, making them easier to spot. The vegetation thins out, improving visibility, and the cooler temperatures make for comfortable game drives. July through September is peak season, especially in the Serengeti where the Great Migration herds gather along the Mara River for the dramatic crossings that have made this spectacle world-famous.

The green season, running from November through May, offers its own compelling advantages. January through March is calving season in the southern Serengeti, when up to 500,000 wildebeest calves are born within a few weeks, attracting predators in extraordinary numbers. The landscape transforms into a lush paradise, bird watching is at its peak with migratory species present, and safari rates are significantly lower. Many seasoned travelers actually prefer the green season for its dramatic skies, fewer crowds, and the raw vitality of the bush.

For Kilimanjaro climbers, the best months are January to mid-March and June to October, when precipitation is lowest. Zanzibar is best visited from June to October or during the short dry season in December and January, when the turquoise waters are calm and crystal clear. Ultimately, there is no wrong time to visit Tanzania, only different experiences to choose from.
