About the Park
Selous Game Reserve (Nyerere National Park)
Nyerere National Park, formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, is the largest protected wildlife area in Africa, covering over 30,000 square kilometers, making it larger than Switzerland. Renamed in 2019 in honor of Tanzania's founding father Julius Nyerere, this vast wilderness is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the continent's last truly untouched ecosystems.
Unlike the popular northern circuit parks, Nyerere offers a more exclusive safari experience with far fewer visitors despite its enormous size. The park is bisected by the mighty Rufiji River, which creates a network of lakes, channels, and floodplains that support a remarkable diversity of wildlife. The park holds the largest population of African wild dogs on the continent, along with significant populations of elephants, hippos, crocodiles, lions, and more.
What sets Nyerere apart is the variety of safari activities available. In addition to traditional game drives, visitors can enjoy boat safaris along the Rufiji River, walking safaris with armed rangers, and fly-camping experiences that bring you even closer to the wilderness. The remoteness and exclusivity of the park make it a favorite among seasoned safari-goers seeking an authentic, uncrowded African bush experience.
