Halal Safaris in Tanzania

Private Tanzania safaris for Muslim travellers, with halal meals arranged at every lodge and game drives planned around prayer times.

A halal safari in Tanzania is a normal safari with three things settled before you land: halal meals at every lodge, game drives planned around salah, and rooms and meal plans without alcohol if you want them. About a third of Tanzanians are Muslim and Zanzibar is almost entirely Muslim, so halal food is everyday fare in Arusha and on the coast. Inside the parks, it comes down to planning.

With a private 4x4 and your own guide, Dhuhr and Asr stops fit around the drive rather than a group timetable; the halal migration and fly-in safaris include one as standard. Fajr and Maghrib fall at the lodge, since park driving ends at 6pm. Prices are 2026 starting rates per person; confirm before booking.

Travelling in Ramadan? Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, during calving season in the southern Serengeti. Tell us your dates early and we will ask each lodge for suhoor before Fajr and iftar at Maghrib.

Common Questions

Halal Safaris: Your Questions Answered

It is a regular Tanzania safari arranged so that every lodge serves halal meals, game drives stop for Dhuhr and Asr at places where you are allowed out of the vehicle, and alcohol-free rooms and meal plans are set up in advance. Fajr and Maghrib normally fall at the lodge, because driving in the national parks is only allowed between 6am and 6pm.
It depends on the lodge, which is why we confirm it before you travel. Some kitchens buy halal-certified meat, overseen in Tanzania by BAKWATA, the national Muslim council. Others cook halal-style food with no pork or alcohol but from a general supplier. Ask which one you are getting. Where a remote camp cannot confirm its meat supply, fish and vegetarian dishes are a simple fallback.
Park rules do not allow you out of the vehicle except at designated places, so your guide plans prayer around picnic sites and the lodge. The qibla from Arusha is about 7 degrees east of true north. Download an offline qibla app and the prayer times before you leave town, and carry extra water for wudu.
Yes. Ramadan 2027 is expected to start around 8 February, which overlaps calving season in the southern Serengeti. Tell us early so each lodge can prepare suhoor before Fajr and have iftar ready at Maghrib. A morning drive, a rest at midday and a short afternoon drive is an easier pattern while fasting.
Zanzibar is almost entirely Muslim, and local restaurants serve halal food by default. International resorts serve alcohol and some may have pork on buffets, so ask your hotel if you want a fully halal kitchen. During Ramadan, restaurants outside hotels close in daylight hours and visitors are asked not to eat or drink in public during the fast.
Our 2026 starting rates run from $3,300 per person for the 7-day halal safari and the 7-day family safari, to $3,800 for the 7-day halal migration safari and $4,400 for the 8-day fly safari. Season, lodge level and group size change the price, so confirm current rates with us before booking.
