About This Route

The Quiet Route

The Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. This unique approach offers a distinctly different experience from the southern routes, with drier conditions, fewer trekkers, and a genuine sense of wilderness and solitude. The route begins near the village of Nale Moru at 1,950 meters and ascends through pine forest and heathland on the mountain's northern slopes. The drier conditions on this side of the mountain mean clearer skies and better views, and the gradual ascent profile makes it one of the more comfortable routes for acclimatization. The Rongai Route is particularly recommended during the rainy season (March-May and November) as the northern slopes receive significantly less precipitation than the southern approaches. The route offers a unique perspective on the mountain, with views toward Kenya and the chance to spot wildlife including colobus monkeys and bushbuck in the lower forest. The descent is via the Marangu Route, giving trekkers the experience of two different sides of the mountain.

Training & Preparation

Physical Training

A 12-week training program is recommended. Focus on hiking with a loaded pack, regular cardio sessions, and leg strength exercises including squats, lunges, and step-ups.

Acclimatization

"Pole pole" (slowly, slowly) is the Kilimanjaro mantra. Staying hydrated (3-4 litres daily) and maintaining a steady pace are your best strategies for avoiding altitude sickness.

Gear

Quality hiking boots (broken in!) are essential. Bring a layering system for temperatures ranging from -20°C at the summit to +30°C in the rainforest.

Mental Preparation

Summit night is the toughest part. Mental resilience and a positive mindset will carry you when your body wants to stop.
